Cities are supposed to be large, urban, developed areas providing bankrupt earning, business opportunities. Cities supposedly have better quality of life because of facilities like sanitation and transportation. They are considered to be planned settlements which provide opportunities for greater interaction between businesses and people. This interaction is mutually beneficial for both the parties and is the reason for migration to urban areas. Cities are the catalyst for development of satellite townships which feed from the city. The migration is also a big headache for any city as makeup of slums is the flip side of it.
People move from villagers to cities in await of greener pastures. City provides them the opportunities to work as labourers, domestic helps and so on. The coin that they earn has to support them and their families in villages. Therefore, they cannot afford proper house facilities and this gives birth to slums. A slum according to UN-HABITAT is is a wear out area of a city characterized by substandard house and squalor and lacking in tenure security. In a developing country like ours a slum typically comprises of informal settlements around the city. These slums generally lack electricity, sanitation, clean pissing and other basic amenities.
