Family structure has been one factor that has been ofttimes examined in the literature on youth violence in general and high educate violence in particular. In this regard, Hawkins and associates (2000) conducted a meta-analysis of over 66 studies of violence juveniles. They found quintuple predictors of violence, one category of which was family structure. According to the authors, non- atomic families in general are much likely to produce children who are unwarranted than nuclear families. Said to be especially susceptible are: integrity parent families, and children of families of teenage parents.

The findings about single parent families are supported by a study conducted by Silver, Field, Sanders and Diego (2000) who interviewed samples of uncivilised/violent (n=31) students and their non-angry/non-violent peers (n=58). Angry students were classified as those who answered affirmatively to the following statement, "sometimes I get so angry that I anxiety I will become violent." Findings were said to show that students werd more likely to report themselves worried about being violent if they came from single parent homes.
