Oftentimes, people go to great lengths to hide the most unsavory parts of themselves, and wear’t reveal to others who they truly are. Sometimes, people who are genuinely evil and conniving can seem to be the kindest. However, as time goes on their villainous natures come to the forefront. In The ruddy Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, and “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe, the antagonists are very talented at hiding their real identities. While Abigail, Chillingworth, and Montresor don innocent guises, their diabolical quests for revenge feature ultimately them.
Although the true natures of Abigail, Chillingworth, and Montresor are incredibly apparent in the end, each character makes a valiant effort to spinal column them up.Abigail, as a seventeen year old girl, uses her callow and girly innocence to cover up her evil, grown-up sins of adultery and witchcraft. While her uncle, the empyrean Parris, confronts her about the witchcraft he saw in the set and questions her reputation in the town, she lies, saying “there be no blush about my name” (Miller 12). Abigail non only manages to dissipate her uncle, but the entire town of Salem, and thus achieves a topographic point of power in the witch trials.
Much like Abigail, Chillingworth is besides able to deceive the entire town of Salem; the small town has no idea Chillingworth’s true motives for staying with Dimmesdale are not to heal the sick man, but instead torture him. “The knowing stranger was exemplary, regarded at least the outward forms of a religious life.” (Hawthorne 102 – 103). Judging by the way that the town views him, Chillingworth is able to cloak his hateful intentions fairly well.
