In this essay I will be discussing the movement language, the choreographers use of gestures in the piece and their affect on the slaying and the contrast between Kamala Devan and Deveraj Thimmoiahs solos. The piece Faultline by Shobana Jeyasingh was choreographed in 2007, performed by her company. The Shobana Jeyasingh leaping Company which was founded in 1988. The company is make out of seven dancers and one apprentice dancer and it is cognize for expressing the artistic vision of its Artistic Director Shobana Jeyasingh.
Jeyasingh was born in Chennai, India and is now living in London. Since she experienced migration herself, this is what gave a distinguishable meaning and more depth to her recent works. Jeyasingh (2007) herself says The most agreeable thing about dance for me is that it always presents a fiction for the human community at large. (p. 5)
Jeyasingh produced many works for the stage, theatre and also television. Some of her commissioned works allow Polar sequences and Pop idle.
She won several awards including the London Dance Performance awards in 1988 and Arts Council Women in the Arts Award. Her choreography reflects on the changes in todays society compared to how it was in the past and how technology has changed it. She also puts in the blurring of tradition and shows prevalent dilemmas through dance. The piece Faultline mainly deals with all the things that happen in the world around us. Jeyasingh has put some of the most dainty and unmentionable issues on stage creating a voice that is real loud and clear but at the same epoch discreet. (Jeyasingh, 2007, p.8)
