Abstract

Managing acute pain in patients with substance abuse disorders presents a variety of clinical and ethical challenges to healthcare providers. Attitudes of fear, mistrust, and paternalism can result in substandard medical care and ultimately, draw patients at risk for less favorable outcomes.
